My Resignation As An Adult

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of a 5 year old again.

  • I want to go to McDonald’s and think that it is a four star restaurant.
  • I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples in a pond with rocks.
  • I want to think M&M’s are better than money because you can eat them.
  • I want to lie under a big oak tree and watch the ants march up its trunk.
  • I want to run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer’s day.
  • I want to go fishing and care more about catching the minnows along the shore than the big bass in the lake.
  • I want to think the world is fair.
  • I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all I knew about were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes. When I didn’t know what I know now. When all I knew was to be happy because I was blissfully unaware of all the things that should make me worried.
  • I want to think that a quarter is worth more than a dollar bill because it is prettier and weighs more.
  • I want to think that everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible.
  • I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things in life again.
  • I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, dreams, the imagination, the Tooth Fairy, a kiss that makes a boo-boo go away, making angels in the snow, and that my dad and mom are the strongest people in the world.

So……here’s my checkbook and my car keys, my credit cards and the bills, my 401K statements, my stocks and bonds, my collections, my insurance premiums, my job, my house and the payments, my e-mail address, pager, cell phone, computer, and watch. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this with me further, you’ll have to catch me

cause……..

Hey Rod – and to think that at that age, we were all SO concerned about being “grown up” !

    All the best,

    Hi Roger,

I’m not so sure I was worried about being grown up at the age I was playing tag but, yeah, we definitely wanted to grow up fast.

    Cheers,
    Rod

Thanks for the awesome reminder of how simple life can be if we let it … some of those things are still possible … and it’s also a reminder to help my kids be kids and help them enjoy the time they have before real responsibility hits them! They deserve it and in this day and age everyone is trying to grow up way too fast. *SmiLes* Suzanne

Sorry Rod but you are showing your age when you start to think like this!! lol

If we could all just retain some of the qualities you listed above then the world would be a much better place.

    Regards
    Sue

how great it would be to turn back the clock
    innocence of child hood eh!
Mind you if they would of had computers when I
    was a kid ,
someone would of invented a way of turning it into a ball
and give it a good kicking mmm now that might work.

    Rod,

Pretty Cool! You had me going there, bro! Yeah, the blissful innocence of youth, eh?

I would have to agree with Sue that if more of us looked at the world this way, it truly would be a better place.

    Hi Rod,

    I wish!

Did the sun always shine then?

Can’t turn the clock back unfortunately.

For some reason I was reminded of Shakespeare’s Seven Ages of Man when I read your post..

    Hi David,

No, the sun didn’t always shine but, as kids, we shed our tears and then moved on. It was quickly over with and forgotten.

I think that as adults we sometimes, oft times?, tend to dwell too much on the negatives in life and forget all of the positive things going on around us.

    Cheers,
    Rod

here, here! the only thing i want to add, is laying on the grass looking up at the clouds, watching them move peacefully across the blue sky and using my imagination to turn them into animals any other thing i could make them out to be!

I want to go back to when I thought all dreams could come true. So officially resigning as an adult now. But I gotta keep my computer cause my adult friends all live there now…..

  11. Rod Macbeth 17. Nov, 2009 at 10:59 am #

Good one, Kecia! Watching the clouds float by is an enjoyable one also.

Quite true about the computer, Holly. I’d be lost without mine. :)

Rod, I actually retired a year ago. I do consider what I do “work,” at least compared to when I made a living.

The next step is to follow you in handing in my resignation letter as an adult. I’ve been pretty darn close to quitting for quite a while now ;)

Great blog. You’re now in my RSS.

I love volunteering each week in my son’s kindergarten class because every child is so innocent. They don’t have the concerns of the world on their shoulders. My son would rather have change than a dollar bill. McDonald’s is the only thing that matters to him and he better get a different toy each time. It’s so refreshing seeing the kids play and get along for the most part if they are not fighting over toys. I don’t think about going back to my childhood as much, but I do wish we could capture those innocent moments and keep them with us forever.
I have to leave his classroom and enter into the real world and try to make sense of everything until my head is about to explode. Thanks for sending us back in time!

Working with young children like that must be a super way to at least approach getting away from the rat race….even if just for a little while.

  16. Rod Macbeth 18. Nov, 2009 at 9:09 am #

    Thanks, Ryan :)

I’m working towards retiring from work but the bank account keeps saying no.

    Hey Rod,

I agree. We need to recapture some of our innocence that can be lost in this “real” world.

One of the hallmarks of getting older is when you round back/, instead of, “I’m 5 1/2, almost 6″ it’s, “I’m 53.” (Even though it’s a day before your 54th birthday.

I do feel old this week.

    Hi Gene,

I hear you on the feeling old this week…seems like all my little aches and pains are doing a massive frontal attack. :)

    Cheers,
    Rod
